Arizona Trip Day 5- Part 2

After the long drive through the Pertified Forest, we headed to the Meteor Crater, which was also on our way to Flagstaff. We finished up with plenty of time to get to our hotel for the night, which was only like 45 minutes away...

There were lots of signs so we knew we were going the right way :)
The compound
The meteor...or what was left.....
Us!
James was ready for hot dogs, and was only happy for a few minutes.....
Luckily I got a couple happy pics of him....
The museum was cool!
We had to rush cuz we got there close to closing time....
The kids liked the simulator that let you make a meteor so you could see the what kind of damage and where it would impact.....Nana took out all of Asia lol!
The Meteor Crater
I guess you used to be able to go down in, but you can't now.....my grandparents and most of my moms side of the family going way back are from here, and before we came up my grandma told me that they sent a bird into a hole down at the bottom of the crater and it died, so they closed it off.....crazy....
Jack explored all possible paths....
Another observation deck....
Jack and some dude....
Me and James, and Tom and Jack....
Jack said there was a puddle at the bottom of the crater
It looked like it was gonna rain the whole time we were there...but it didn't...not like Maryland lol
Amazing.
The older kids enjoyed watching cable, while waiting for the laundry to be done...our hotel had a free laundromat, and we could never get more than one load in one machine, cuz people were camped out in there with like a years worth of dirty clothes and all the machines were in use simultaneously...crazy....
James was happy to be getting a steady diet of hot dogs again
Jack watched the new Superman movie like 4 times....
Cutie :)

Arizona Trip Day 5- Part 1

We spent the 5th day driving from Santa Fe to Flagstaff AZ. On the way, we stopped to see the petrified forest and the meteor crater. This post will be about the petrified forest though.
It's huge!!
Here we are :)
Petrified log round
Different petrified log pieces
Jack, the science guy
Nana and Jack decided they wanted the book to collect stamps of all the national parks they go to :)
James was tired, but he liked the pink rocks
He really enjoyed being outside here....the breeze was really nice
Just chillin' under the tree :)
It was pretty great tree
Looking out over the desert
Me :)
The view was amazing!
Sadly, we were not allowed off the trail to look for fossils :(

Us :)
More of us :)
The rocks were so beautiful!
Small store
Large black bird that kept trying to eat us.....
Jack looking down at the rocks
It took us about 2 hours to drive through the whole park, and we didn't get out and look at every stop, either....
I loved the black and red coloring the best
James slept through the whole drive....
Petrified logs at the base of the mountains
More petrified wood in the distance
A lookout point
These look like real logs...hard to believe they are now rocks!
Lots of educational reading....
Nana :)
We snuck off the trail to see some petrified logs up close.....
Calvin :)
You really did have to touch it to believe it....
Jack :)
So many colors....
It made me wonder if these were redwoods originally, or if they had been burned?
Or was it just a normal tree and the colors just evolved over time?
Jack :)
