We love to try new restaurants. It's a thing with us. We love to cook our own food, but we also love to try other people's food :D
We've tried quite a few new places lately and they were all pretty good, so I thought I'd go ahead and review them for you :)
Restaurant #1: Martins Grill
Last Saturday, we went to lunch with my bro and his wife after helping them move. So sad they won't be as close, but NC isn't too far to visit, thank goodness lol. Anyway, they took us to this local mom and pop place near their old house. Good family restaurant, and not expensive. James loved the hot dog and fries. I had a burger and tater tots which were greasy, but most excellent! The coleslaw was also really good. My Dad got a brisket sandwich, which looked Amazing. They had Cheerwine in the bottle, so totally a win for me. I'd DEFINITELY eat there again.
Restaurant #2: Capital Ale House
This was our Valentines Day dinner spot. Tom's pick, and while it was a lil more expensive than we normally do, the food was pretty good as was the ambiance. We had the Bavarian pretzel appetizer, which was excellent, Tom ordered the Chesapeake mac'n'cheese, and I had a steak with mashed potatoes and broccoli. My food was good, didn't love the potatoes, they were oddly sweet, but broccoli and steak were perfect :) Tom's mac'n'cheese was full of seafood, but the cheesy sauce was more sauce and less cheese, so not as good as expected. There were a ton of other things on the menu that looked good, so, I'd go back again for sure!
Restaurant #3: Shyndigz
We went here for dessert on Valentines day, on the recommendation of a friend. We were not disappointed! The desserts were incredibly fabulous, the ambiance was fantastic, and the company was the best part :) I had the salted chocolate caramel cake, and Tom had a mint brownie sundae. Both were heavenly. It was like eating dessert on the Great British Baking Show. The cake was a large portion, and soooo rich that I took it home and ate it for 3 more days lol! We will definitely be going back there.
Restaurant #4: The Patron
We like to keep the party rolling, so, the day after Valentines Day, we went out to dinner again. Tom is on midnight's for the next month, so we only see him for 36 hours a week :(
Dinner out two days in a row seemed justified since we have such limited time together.
This local Mexican restaurant is now my fav place to eat. The food was yummy, the prices were good, the variety was staggering. I had the carnitas, Tom had the shrimp fajitas. Both were delicious. Sorry, Don Pedro's, this restaurant is replacing you in the regular rotation. Side note, I haven't had Mexican food this good since we moved here. For the most part Mexican food is good wherever you choose to eat, but this place...this place has Really Good Mexican food. I'm in love.
Restaurant #5: Java Jack's
We ended up here in early February. We had a great need for lunch and it was right in the neighborhood where we had been running errands. It has great ratings, but frankly, we were underwhelmed with the price of food versus quality. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't great. I had a turkey croissant sandwich, Tom had the crab cake sandwich. Both were ok, but not for the price we paid. It's a cute restaurant, but we probably won't eat there again. Also, their website doesn't work, which is one of my pet peeves. Maybe if we had gone there for breakfast instead of lunch.....
Restaurant #6: Citizen Burger Bar
This was a date we did back in January. We went to the VMFA (https://www.vmfa.museum/)
and had lunch afterwards. This place has a GREAT burger. It's a farm to table restaurant, so all the ingredients were very fresh, and super good. We had the burgers, obviously...I had the citizen burger, and Tom had the steakhouse burger. Both were heavenly. I would eat there weekly if it were closer. The fries were OK, boardwalk style which don't float my boat, but there were plenty of them, so portions were good. Tom got the onion rings, which were a little bland but otherwise good. We will def be going back when we are downtown again :)
PS- Anytime y'all want to get food with us, just shoot me an email. We would love to share the experience with friends :)
